Name: Bethany Estes
Grade: 10
Future college: Texas A&M
Wingspan: What made you take art?
Estes: “I took art because art has always been interesting to me and I love the idea of being able to create something to inspire others.”
Wingspan: How long have you been into art?
Estes: “I’ve been into art since I was around five. I would draw every day with my best friend at the time and it sort of became a hobby for me.”
Wingspan: How do you express yourself through your work?
Estes: “I like to put my feelings and thoughts into my work, I like to draw flowers so for an example I would make them warm colored if I was happy, or cold colors if I was sad.”
Wingspan: What are your favorite mediums?
Estes: “My favorite medium is probably watercolor because I love the way it looks and how easy it is for me, and there’s also lots of techniques I could use to make it a new experience each time.”
Wingspan: What are some of your most challenging mediums?
Estes: “I struggle with colored pencils. They hurt to use after a while and constantly blending is a pain for me.”
Wingspan: What has been your favorite project?
Estes: “I like doing self portraits with the grids, it makes it interesting because I know exactly where everything is supposed to go. It also allows me to draw myself in a new perspective, so that’s fun.”
Wingspan: What has been the most difficult project?
Estes: “My most difficult so far was the black and white projects we’ve done. It’s hard for me to figure out the right shades of grey for each color, and I just prefer the end result of more colorful works.”
Wingspan: Do you plan on pursuing art after high school?
Estes: “No, I plan to go into psychology, but I would like to do it as a hobby.”
Wingspan: Does it make you feel better after drawing? Why?
Estes: “Yes, I like to feel proud of what I’ve done and know I’ve done something good and creative. It’s just really satisfying.”
Wingspan: Do you prefer reaching out into different mediums or do you like staying in one specific area?
Estes: “I like staying in one specific area because I know I’ll be familiar with it. If I have to though, I don’t mind experimenting with other types of paint.”
