Pictured above: the theatre department’s fall showing of “Singing in the Rain,” back in 2018. Within the span of a few months, freshman Nicholas Giles has experienced an entire musical production, while also finding a new hobby in the process. In this week’s edition of Artistic Expressions, Wingspan sits down with Giles as he talks about his passion for acting.

Nicholas Giles

Name: Nicholas Giles

Grade: freshman

Hobby: theatre

Years of experience: 1

Wingspan: What got you interested in theatre?

Giles: “A couple months ago the theatre department did Bright Star in December, which was fun. There weren’t a lot of dudes there, so that left all of us getting some sort of role. From there I just began to be more involved.”

Wingspan: How was your overall experience with Bright Star?

Giles: “Overall it was fun and definitely taught me a lot. I had a lot of trouble with my lines because I have Autism, so it’s very hard for me to memorize stuff. Overall, the choreography, especially in one of our scenes, the bar scene, was fun.”

Wingspan: Do you think that theatre has taught you anything that you can utilize off the stage as well?

Giles: “It helped me memorize more stuff in and out of school, and it helped me to concentrate more.”

Wingspan: Would you say you are close with other people in theatre?

Giles: “Yes, most of us are all in a group already. Once you audition and become part of the cast, you’re with these people for months at a time. We started our production in the beginning of the year, almost to the end of the first semester.”

Wingspan: What’s a common misconception about your art?

Giles: “A lot of people don’t think acting [on a stage] is fun, because mostly acting is seen on TV, and it’s a whole different thing.”

Wingspan: Do you see yourself pursuing theatre in the future?

Giles: “Totally, probably through college.”
