Wingspan: What inspired you to start dancing?

Saxena: “I started dancing because my cousin danced and I really looked up to her, so I started to dance too when I was around four or five years old.”

Wingspan: What type of dance do you do?

Saxena: “Right now I do Bharatnatyam, a type of Indian classical dance, Bollywood, and HipHop. I started doing bharatnatyam the summer before third grade. Bollywood has been on and off since I was 5 years old and I started HipHop in sixth grade.”

Wingspan: How did you start teaching dance?

Saxena: “My mom taught dance and I was really influenced by that so I took over her company and I teach dance now.”

Wingspan: Who do you teach dance to and why?

Saxena: “I teach to various ages. The smallest group I teach to are four years old and as of right now I go up to eleven years old.”

Wingspan: What are some rewarding aspects of teaching dance?

Saxena: “Some rewarding aspects of teaching dance would be that I get to work on my creativity because I get to make new dances and I get to see my students grow.”

Wingspan: What are some struggles you have faced when teaching dance?

Saxena: “Parents for sure. Parents don’t really understand that there’s a journey to go through in dance and they oftentimes want to put their kids in groups they are not ready for and it’s really hard for me as a teacher to explain that for them which makes communicating with parents difficult.”

Wingspan: How do you plan on continuing dance in the future?

Saxena: “I always want to keep dance as something ongoing in the future by maybe joining a team or keep teaching dance.”
