A golf enthusiast for nearly 10 years, junior Darby Deans has taken her golf skills to become one of the top players in the state, earning individual championships at both the district and regional level.

“My dad started me in golf and from there I just fell in love with it,” Deans said. “I’ve been playing since I was about six years old.”

Deans believes golf has helped her enhance her work ethic and dedication aside from the usual physical improvements.

“It’s really taught me that you have to work to get what you want and where you are now,” Deans said.

Deans is in her junior year, a year notorious for added course work and rigorous classes. With daily practices and constant tournaments, balancing golf with school work can be difficult at times.

“It’s kind of hard because we miss a lot of school competing,” Deans said. “Going into tutorials and emailing teachers helps.”

While Deans is an individual champion, playing in a team is an important source of support and motivation for her and the rest of her teammates.

“I like that when we win we all know that we worked hard so it’s paying off,” Deans said. “It’s a good feeling when we all win together.”
