Sarah Buss
A former volleyball player turned into a varsity golf player, sophomore Sarah Buss has used golf to enhance her character and sportsmanship and is now an avid fan of the sport.
“At first I was a volleyball player and I was into that and then I got tired of that so I decided to try out for the golf team,” Buss said. “It was really fun and I liked it so I started freshman year.”
Being a part of the varsity team, a group of five different girls in different grades with different skills and personalities, has taught Buss a lot about sisterhood and provides her with a sense of communal support.
“We have camaraderie as a team,” Buss said. “It’s like a big family and I feel like playing on a team like that really helps you develop and mature.”
Constantly focusing on improving in golf not only strengthens skills on the course, but also helps build stronger work dedication and a more open mindset as players learn more about their individual capabilities.
“Golf is more of a mental game than it is physical,” Buss said. “I’ve learned how to be mature around the course and at school.”
For Buss, playing golf individually and playing golf in a team can be different but the results and the lessons learned are equally beneficial.
“When you’re on your course it’s just you and the ball, you don’t have to rely on anybody else to help you unlike in volleyball, which is a team sport,” Buss said. “It’s just you, but overall, it is a team sport.”
Buss is excited to take on her second state meet and hopes to learn from her teammates, coaches and the rest of the players competing in the state tournament.
“I’m really excited,” Buss said “It’s going to be awesome just to be there around so many people who are equally talented as us.”
