Blush to beards

A look at why girls and guys adorn their faces with cosmetics or facial hair

February 28, 2017

For many girls on campus, makeup is a daily ritual while for some guys, growing a beard or mustache is a rite of passage. In this side by side story, Wingspan takes a look at the thoughts behind these facial adornments.

Why girls wear makeup

It’s impossible to go through  a whole day at school without spotting someone wearing makeup.

According to a Renfrew Center Foundation study, over 58 percent of girls between the ages 8 and 18 wear makeup.

Which means a lot of the girls on campus are bound to wear makeup at least once, but why is makeup so popular?

Insecurities in a girl’s natural state seem to be a huge factor.

“When I have makeup on I feel confident and like I can conquer the world,” junior Ashtyn Steven said. “Without makeup i kinda feel like a toad.”

While makeup is an exponential confidence boost, there is also an artistic aspect to applying makeup.

“One of the main reasons I love using makeup is I’m an artist so when I use makeup I can kind of make it my own and be as creative as possible,” sophomore Brenna Dobbs said.

Despite the reason for wearing makeup, buying the actual products is a different story.

Finance website, mint.com came to the conclusion that women spend more than $15,000 on makeup in a lifetime.

“Normally when I buy my makeup I go to Sephora and their stuff is kinda expensive there so each time I shop I spend about $50,” sophomore Melia Kholar said. “At the end of the day it’s worth it because whenever I wear makeup I feel good about myself and feel better throughout my day.”

Why boys grow facial hair

For some guys, growing facial hair is an unavoidable factor in the transitioning from a boy into a man.

Once a guy has to start shaving, he has to make a decision to have facial hair or not.

For many, the choice to grow a beard or mustache is about looking older.

“I like my beard because it makes me look  older,” senior Nithin Hari said. “When I don’t have it I look like a freshman so this way people know I’m a senior and I’m not actually lying when I say that.”

“I have a mustache because it makes me look more older, mature, and cuts away from my baby face,” junior Julian Torres said. “I look 15 and like a younger person with it I feel more mature all the time.”

Some girls on campus think the same way.

“I like guys with facial hair,” junior Sabrina Poole said. “It makes them look more clean cut, mature, and I just think it looks better because I don’t know it makes them seem more manly I guess than guys with like clean shaven faces. Guys with clean shave faces look childish and like high schoolers.”

However for some girls, facial hair isn’t a make or break situation.

“It’s not something I look for to be like oh dang I want him because he has facial hair,” sophomore Brenna Dobbs said. “I kind of care less but I prefer not to have facial hair.”

Perhaps the real test for guys with facial hair is what would they do if a girl didn’t like what they have.

“Would i shave it?,” Torres said. “If a girl in the future said she didn’t like it and I like her I would shave it but that’s not the case so I’m keeping it.”
