Sincerely Sydney: stop waiting for the weekends
The weekend is only two days out of the seven, yet many of us focus on the days leading up to those two days, rather than enjoying today.
We’re all guilty of saying things like “I just need to get through this week” or “I’ll be in a better mood once this test is over”. What we don’t realize is that throughout all this waiting, life is passing us by.
I’m at fault for having this mindset too and I often base my happiness on what’s going on in my life. However, I don’t believe it’s healthy to have such a hard time getting out of bed during the weekdays. I want to be able to make good things happen, instead of waiting for them.
Getting excited for Mondays-Fridays is easier said than done, but it really can improve your life. It can help to appreciate the small things that bring joy throughout the week and that gives us more to look forward to. Instead of focusing on what we don’t have, we should be thankful for the things we already have like friends, family, education, our home.
It’s not just weekends we are waiting for. Many people are waiting for things like graduation, moving out, going to college, starting a career and a family. We believe that our life starts when those special things happen to us, but life has already started and we can miss out on important moments with all of this waiting.
We are never going to be as young as we are now. Even though most students are bombarded with due dates and studying for tests, they shouldn’t spend the week counting down until the weekend. Instead try to go out during the week, even if it’s just going to get fast food with friends. Take up a new hobby and strive to be positive everyday. No one wants to look back on high school as the times they wished the week would end sooner. Every day is a day worth living, so make it count and enjoy today.
