Student Council sponsoring grants up to $500
Known for putting on various activities throughout the school year, Student Council is now sponsoring grants up to $500 for various clubs and organizations on campus that submit an application by May 12.
“The clubs have to go through an application process in order to receive the money,” StuCo member Kenedi McCormick said. “So whoever has the best application and seems to have the best ideas. Based on that we hope that clubs will be able to further their activities and really reach out to their audiences.”
The application requires clubs to detail what they are planning to do with money from the grant before sending it on to StuCo sponsor Jordan Benton.
“Just like FEF does grants for Great Ideas for teachers across the district, StuCo has allocated a portion of our funds raised to be used for grants for clubs that we have on our campus,” Benton said. “The clubs will need to have a valid and satisfactory response to the purpose of their club, how the money will help the school, and what they intend to do with this money.”
This year it is estimated that a standard grant of $500 will be given to each designated club or organization.
“This money will for sure help out in the long run because there are a couple organizations that struggle throughout the year to come up with money,” senior StuCo member Jada Harris said. “There are a bunch of things they do like competitions and competing for scholarships from the involvement. The grants are going to help them to go out, compete, and make things more fun. It’s also educational as well.”
StuCo hopes that this decision to grant money will accurately represent their purpose and provide additional resources for clubs as well.
“This does accurately embody StuCo because before we make any decision we ask ourselves how can this impact the school in the best way?” junior Sebastian Moreno said. “Many clubs want to accomplish big things or host events but don’t have the funds, so by us providing a grant they can achieve their goals and it also cycles back into the student body.”
For organizations such as HOSA, a grant will be helpful in defraying costs.
“I think it’s great that this grant is available,” HOSA president, senior, Yash Harkara said. “It’s really going help clubs like ours that spend lots of money on competition and other partnerships and services for the students.”
