Opinion: Shattered Dreams
The Shattered Dreams program run originated to create an emotional effect on students and basically make them feel bad about drinking and driving on prom night. Which they probably should, but does it actually work?
The thing is, if people are going to do it, there’s not really much anybody can do to stop them. It’s like the programs meant to make bullies feel bad. The message and the intention are good things but the overall effect is most likely slim.
The sad truth is, people usually need to experience trauma themselves or watch a loved one experience trauma in order to truly want to stop doing a bad thing. By then, though, in regards of drinking and driving, it’s sadly usually too late.
People shouldn’t drink and drive. That’s an obvious statement. But does that mean they will stop just because they know it’s the right thing to do? Unfortunately, no.
I admire the set up and all the effort they put into the design of the program. I personally think it’s really moving and well done from what I’ve seen and heard. But even so, I don’t think it (or anything really) will end drinking and driving on prom night or any night.
