About to serve the ball over the net, junior Emily Nickle joins the varsity team in her ninth year playing the sport.

Wingspan: How long have you been playing volleyball and what got you started?

Nickel: “I’ve been playing volleyball for around nine years now and my mom really got me started. I had just moved to my elementary school and really wanted to connect with my friends so me and a few friends started a rec team just to play for fun.”

Wingspan: What fuels your passion to play?

Nickel: “I think it’s to make people proud, I at heart am a people pleaser and I like when people are happy with me and when I’m complimented. I’m overall very fond of the game and figuring out strategies and new ways to win.”

Wingspan: How do you mentally prepare before a game?

Nickel: “I do a lot of mind tricks. I was taught a while ago how to clear your mind so that you are able to focus on what’s important and not important. I like to do breathing and talking to myself really calms me down.”

Wingspan: What is your favorite part about being on a team?

Nickel: “Just creating new friendships is hands down my favorite part. Getting to know different people on and off the court and creating a bond with them. I love team dinners and just being together and being loved by so many individuals.”

Wingspan: What is something that you are hoping to improve on?

Nickel: “I hope to improve on my overall leadership as a teammate and learning to include everybody. I have new personal goals for next year that when off season hits I’ll be working very hard.”

Wingspan: What is the hardest part about volleyball?

Nickel: “Staying determined is the hardest whenever you have lost a set.”

Wingspan: What is your biggest inspiration?

Nickel: “My parents for sure inspire me, they have always been there for me and motivated me. They have been there for me through thick and thin and I wouldn’t be where I am without them.”
