Breaking the 50 yard freestyle record, sophomore Mallory Showalter has participated in swimming since age eight.

Wingspan: How long have you been swimming and what got you started?

Showalter: “I have been swimming since I was eight years old. A couple of my friends swam in a different town and they really enjoyed it so I wanted to try it out.”

Wingspan: What fuels your passion to swim?

Showalter: “I think a lot of the people really do because of the encouragement and everything it’s just really fun to be around them and the exercise is really good as well.”

Wingspan: What records have you broken for the school?

Showalter: “I broke the 50 yard freestyle record.”

Wingspan: What do you think is the most challenging part about your sport?

Showalter: “I think the time it takes because it does take up a lot of your time especially in the mornings because you have to go to swim practice every morning so I think definitely managing the time is kind of hard.”

Wingspan: How do you get in the right mindset before a race?

Showalter: “I usually just get in my zone I listen to music and focus and see what my race would be like, just preparing ahead of time.”

Wingspan: Is there anything that you are looking to improve on?

Showalter: I just want to do my best every race.”

Wingspan: What is your favorite part about your sport?

Showalter: My favorite part about swimming is definitely the people because they’re so fun to be around.”
