Sunyoung Yun

Grade: 12

Future College: Art Center College of Design

Future job: Animator

Wingspan: How long have you been doing art for?

Sun: “I’ve been doing art for as long as I can remember. Drawing, sketching, painting, art has always been enjoyable for me.”

Wingspan: How has art affected your life?

Sun: “Since I love art so much it has now basically become a part of me. It’s how I express myself, and it’s an essential part of my life at this point. I spend a lot of time on creating. It has become much more than a hobby for me.”

Wingspan: Do you take art classes outside of school? How long have you been doing that?

Sun: “I do take art lessons outside. For the most part I’ve always had an instructor outside of school. I’ve been taking art classes with my current instructor for about a year now.”

Wingspan: What is it like taking three art classes at school?

Sun: “I really like it. I get to spend time on the subjects that I care about. Art History, 2D and 3D is closely connected to each other so taking all of these classes together enhances my experience.”

Wingspan: If it wasn’t art, what else can you see yourself doing with your future?

Sun: “I can’t think of anything else I would like to do other than art. I think I can see myself as an environmental activist, but I would prefer to do that through my art.”

Wingspan: What or who inspires your artwork?

Sun: “I often get inspiration from nature. I enjoy drawing and painting animals, but for the last year I’ve been trying to get out of my comfort zone and practice portraits. I think global warming is a critical issue at this time period, and so I hope to make pieces that raise awareness regarding the environment.”

Wingspan: What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone who wants to pursue art?

Sun: “There’s a lot of people who will tell you that you won’t be able to make a profitable income if you pursue art. There may be people who try to discourage you in your pursuit of art. But art is much more applicable than what people think. Any industry needs an artist whether it be designing or painting. Everything we use has been designed by someone at one point. When in doubt, just think of how much money the Marvel Studios make. Art is definitely a path worth pursuing. Be true to your heart, follow your passions. Always to express, never to impress.”
