Kanz Bitar

In this week’s culinary crusade, Sul & Bean’s take on Korean shaved ice dish Bingsoo satisfied staff reporter Kanz Bitar’s sweet tooth.

Sul & Beans gets Bingsoo done right

Since ice cream is one of my favorite things in the world to eat, and I’m trying to be more open now to new foods, I decided to go to Sul & Beans to try the different flavors of shaved ice (also known as Bingsoo) they offer.

The first thing I noticed when I looked up the menus prior to going was how big the bowls were and the color of the toppings. After eating all the flavors, I realized that the actual base is just shaved, milk-flavored ice cream, and the powder on top is the flavor. Since the flavor was strong, I didn’t need more.

I ordered three bowls, the first one was Injeolmi Bingsoo, which is covered with steamed, powdered dried beans and topped with rice cake and nuts. The second one I got is Taro Bingsoo; the taro was sprinkled all over the shaved ice and was topped with rice cake, coconut flakes and red bean paste. Surprisingly out of all three, this was the one I liked the most. For the last bowl I got, I chose to go with a flavor that I thought I would like, Strawberry Cheese Bingsoo which is basically just Bingsoo topped with strawberries and cheesecake cubes. This one was actually my least favorite of the three mainly because of the cheesecake. I didn’t like the way it tasted so if I ever go back, I would probably just order the regular Strawberry Bingsoo.

One extra thing I ordered was the Green Tea Injeolmi Toast. It was really weird eating green tea flavored toast but I actually liked it. It basically tasted like I was eating toast and drinking green tea. I don’t know if I would ever try it again but I’m glad I tried it.

I enjoyed everything I ate. Each bowl is around $10 but they’re pretty big so I think they’re inexpensive since you can share it with people. I really liked this place so I’m going to go back for sure.
