Soccer teams take aim at playoffs
Both boys’ and girls’ are in the middle of the playoff race
With basketball entering its final stages, the school’s sport scene is slowly shifting back outside as the beginning of spring creeps closer. For both the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams, that means potential playoff runs.
The girls’ soccer team currently sits in 4th place in district. The team has had some dominating wins, including a 6-0 win against Little Elm, a 4-1 win against Wakeland, and a 8-2 pummeling of The Colony.
“I think the season has gone well so far,” head coach Cissy Blaisure said. “We are right in the mix for a possible play-off spot and hoping going into the second half of district cleaning up some areas in which we need to improve.”
Countering the wins are some tough losses, allowing five goals against 6A Plano and district leader Centennial.
“We must manage our defense better in order to protect our goal and relieve the offense,” Blaisure said. “We have made some changes that can possibly give us a push going into our final district games. Our goal is to continue to build our offensive attack while keeping the opponent from scoring on us. We are striving to play better in each game our second time around. We are right in the mix of a very competitive district.”
The team believes that the first round of district had some up and down results, but the second go around will be much more positive.
“So far this season has been crazy and out of the norm for every team in our district,” senior captain Jessica Long said. “The most unexpected things have happened and are continuing to happen. As a team, we’ve done well with overcoming difficult games and working on what needs to be fixed. We are on the right track so far, and all we need is to finish strong in the second round.”
The boys’ team is in some unprecedented territory as the second round of district play begins. Two years ago, the team was 25-2 and went to the state quarterfinal. Last year, the team finished third in the district, finishing behind two of the top 10 teams in Texas. Now, the team is currently fifth and is struggling to put a string of positive results together.
“We’ve struggled to find ourselves so far this year,” head coach Fred Kaiser said. “Some days we’re on, and some days we’re off, so we’re just struggling to find consistency.”
The team has also had a roller coaster of season. Losing to Frisco, who currently sit beneath them, the team came out and drew against Centennial, who currently sit second in the standings and have only dropped five points in the six games before the match.
“We just need to be more consistent in our play,” Kaiser said. “When we play well, we can beat anybody, but if we’re not consistent in our play, we end up with a lot of ties.”
Senior captain David Kwon echoed Kaiser’s thoughts, believing that consistency is the key to success.
“It has taken us some time to bond as a team and raise our team chemistry,” Kwon said. “A lot of those who weren’t on varsity last year have stepped up to match the intensity and the speed of the varsity game. Of course, the past four years of Liberty soccer have set a high standard for us to follow, as we finished with many victories and titles. It’s no doubt that we have been weighted down by it. For now, we need to focus on nothing else but our upcoming games. We have to be consistent with our games and come out to play with determination and integrity.”
For Kwon, defying the odds and making a deep playoff run is something the team is capable of doing.
“If we do all that,” Kwon said. “We will no doubt beat everyone’s expectations that they have with us, and go far into the playoffs.”
