In this week’s edition of Artistic Expression, Wingspan sits down with sketchbook artist Jaden “Silver” Pearl as she discusses her passion for drawing.

Jaden “Silver” Pearl

Name: Jaden “Silver” Pearl

Grade: Junior

Years sketching: 8

Inspiration: tokidoki, anime, fashion design, Instagram and Pinterest artists

Wingspan: When did you start getting involved in art?

Pearl: “I think I was in second or third grade. I used to just draw for fun, and then in fourth grade, I started [getting more serious about it].”

Wingspan: Do you see yourself continuing this in the future?

Pearl: “Yes, I actually plan on selling my designs as a fashion designer. I actually just kind of picked it up when I took the class this year with Ms. Swinnea. I’ve been really interested after learning from her. I used to just sew to sew, but it was really interesting to me that you could use sewing as a career.”

Wingspan: What kinds of art are you most interested in?

Pearl: “I mainly like to sketch but I also sew, do digital art, I cosplay, and I write. I’m also working on two different comics right now.”

Wingspan: What is your favorite thing about art?

Pearl: “I would have to say the creativity. You have to put emotion into whatever world you are creating. Everything you draw is something new. You’re creating everything in this small world and you just kind of build off of that.”

Wingspan: What would you say is the most difficult thing about art?

Pearl: “Organizing. Once you have an idea, it’s easy to hyperfixate on it. And then you find something else and it can become sort of distracting.”

Wingspan: What is your most favorite thing that you have created?

Pearl: “With what I’ve drawn, it would have to be a dragon species that I named ‘spider eyes.’ It’s like a dragon that has eight legs and eight eyes, and two sets of wings.”
