Win or play again and maybe again
The baseball team will take on Frisco Friday night in a game that will determine whether or not a playoff berth is in the cards. Head coach Scott McGarrh believes the team is up for the challenge and is eager to play the game.
“As a player, that’s all you can ask for,” McGarrh said. “They asked me last week prior to the Heritage game. We control our own future. It’s simple. It’s all you can ask for. We don’t have to worry about anybody else. We get to control what we get to do next week.”
Senior and Seton Hall commit Noah Thompson will be taking the mound in this crucial encounter, coming in with a 6-2 record and 2.06 ERA.
“We’re taking it as a playoff game,” Thompson said. “We’re going to not change anything that we’ve been doing. We’ve beat them in the past and can do it again. It’s gonna be a tough game, and I believe that we can get it done.”
The players know that this game is more than a normal district game.
“We want to try to treat it like a normal game, but it’s pretty obvious that we need to win,” Thompson said. “We need to treat it like a playoff game and get the win today.”
However, this key game may be forced to be played on Saturday, as thunderstorms are in the forecast for game time. If Friday’s game is postponed, the team may be forced to play three games on Saturday.
“We have reserved Prosper, so we have a turf field if we need it,” McGarrh said. “We don’t want to push anything to Monday, because of the weather forecast for Monday, which calls for a 60 percent chance of rain.”
Regardless of the date of the game, the magnitude of the game is felt by the players on the team.
“Besides playoffs this is the biggest district game I’ve ever had,” Thompson said. “It’s pretty much a playoff game. It’s pretty much win or go home.”
