One of many new faces on campus this year is Mykaela Alfred. Alfred is coaching basketball and track, while also teaching Esports. Graduating from the University of Texas at Tyler with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and a minor in physical education, Alfred obtained a Master’s degree in Business Administration. Wingspan sat down with Alfred to find out more about who she is as a teacher and coach.

Wingspan: How are you liking the campus so far and how is it going?

Alfred: “I am really enjoying Liberty  and really happy to be here and in a friendly environment. It’s one of the places where you come in everyday and it doesn’t feel like a job.”

Wingspan: Why do you want to come and teach at Frisco and why do you want to do it?

Alfred: “I Am originally from East Texas my family’s was really small real close and I was really scared to make the move to here and when I came on campus and meet Coach Reedy I got the flow of the practice and just seeing almost every kid walking in the hallway and having  a smile on their face is just a friendly environment  and it is just a  positive welcoming environment so that played a role in my decision.”

Wingspan: Why did you decide to coach basketball and track? Were you a big time athlete in school?

Alfred: “Yes, I have played two years of basketball in college at University of Texas at Tyler and ran track for five years and it’s super technical and just keeps me overly involved.”

Wingspan: How is it being here as a basketball coach and what are you looking forward to?

Alfred: “I am looking forward to making an impact. I know I am coming into a good program and coach Reedy is a phenomenal coach and very strategic and learned a lot from him and ultimately knows to be a better basketball player and better athlete as well.”

Wingspan: Why did you want to teach Esports? Were you playing throughout high school, college, middle school, or elementary or was it just in high school that you just took Esports?

Alfred: “I used to be a big gamer when I was younger but I got away from it but Esports is an evolving industry there is a lot to learn and the business of it and just helps and provide knowledge of it. Some people think Esports is just gaming the whole time but it means a lot more and also provides scholarships for colleges.”
