The girls’ are now one game away from their second consecutive title as the girls’ basketball team beat Randle High School Thursday 66-37 in the UIL 5A Semifinal to advance to the 5A State Final on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in San Antonio.
“Anytime you can beat a good [school] you feel good about it,” head coach Ross Reedy said. “Obviously being able to be in the final to try and do something special again is a nice feeling.”
Scoreless in the first quarter, 5 star athlete Jacy Abii turned it up in the next three quarters, nearly finishing with a quadruple double of 17 points, 18 rebounds, eight assists, and six blocked shots.
“It feels weird because I don’t realize that I score a lot, I’m just kinda like hooping to hoop and I just want to win the game,” Abii said. “But it feels good knowing that.”
To get their second straight ring, the girls’ will have to beat Mansfield Timberview High School, a team that beat them 40-19 earlier this year.
“I think if we just play poised and we can be ourselves then we can get another ring,” Abii said.
Entering Saturday’s final as the defending state champions, the Redhawks are the underdog.
“So Mansfield Timberview certainly, everybody’s favorite, headed down,” Reedy said. “But you got to keep your mind open. There’s enough [data] there to feel like hey, there’s some opportunity, but make no mistake, it’s gonna be tough.”
