Eleven Redhawk track and field athletes competed in the rain interrupted Region 2-5A Championships on Friday and Monday at the University of Texas at Arlington’s Maverick Stadium with seniors Sydni Wilkins and Jack Voehringer advancing to the state meet at the Mike Myers Stadium in Austin on May 3.
“We had a lot of impressive regional effort and solid performances,” girls’ head track coach Khera Vay said. “They went out and performed their best all season on a large scale [despite the rain]. As their coach, I am beyond proud.”
For Voehringer, who set a new best time for both himself and the Redhawks in the 800m run, qualifying for state was the name of the game at regionals.
“My goal headed into the meet was to qualify for state in the 800m,” Voehringer said. “I knew it was going to be a fast race with a lot of really talented runners, but I believed that my training could carry me to a state bid. I was also really excited to run a new personal best and lower my school record time that I set earlier this year. The rain delay really just dragged on the stress and anxiety that came with the meet. It was a really long weekend, but I’m happy it’s over now and I came away with the result I wanted.”
