Opinion: Housewives trump golf
A trip to watch the Byron Nelson golf tournament ended up giving me an unexpected, inside look into the world of reality TV. As a golf player, I was ecstatic enough to be at the tournament itself. However, Saturday soon became something more than golf.
On a lark I had decided to tweet at Stephanie Hollman, star of the hit TV show, The Real Housewives of Dallas, saying I was going to be at the Byron. Not expected anything from it, I got a reply that said to swing by her house. So, that’s exactly what Alex Moore and I did. Next thing we know, we are having lunch at her house with Brandi Redmond, another member of the show. They were both incredibly nice and humble and answered all of the questions I asked.
So there it was, two high school boys in a million dollar house speaking to two local celebrities. We talked for an hour, just small talk about random things, and it truly seemed like we were old acquaintances.
Perhaps, the best part of the talk, insight to the inner workings of reality TV. Bravo interviewed many people in the Dallas area to find the right group of people. There is a lot of speculation on how “real” many reality TV shows are and Hollman and Redmond said that it is as real as it gets. Producers will often give the stars subjects to discuss but the actual content, fights, drama, and opinions are really from their own with nothing on the show staged or scripted toward a certain person or event happening.
From there, producers will often bring them all together but after that it is up to them whether they mingle or clash. While recording the season, cameras are recording around the clock in order to get the best footage for the show. Considering this is one of the hottest reality shows on right now, I was surprised how friendly they were to anyone who walked up to them or asked for pictures and thought that the people they are on the show are no different to the ones in real life.
One of the things we talked about was how they manage social media and hate. As Hollman and Redmond are only up and coming stars with each having under fifteen-thousand Twitter followers, with Lisa Vanderpump, star of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills having over 1.1 million followers on Twitter, it is evident that they will gain thousands of more fans in the future if Bravo books the show for another season. Hollman said she believes they will be given another season and hopes she can bring more love to the screen.
The days spent at the Four Seasons were all about golf for many and while Sergio Garcia became the first player to win twice at the Nelson, Hollman and Redmond stole the show for me.
