As school starts again and students resume their normal routines, advisory is set to resume on Aug. 26 with students remaining in their 2nd period classes through Aug. 23.
“We will be having class meetings during this time the first two weeks of school,” assistant principal Jason Harris said. “Having class meetings the first two weeks of school ensures that students know and understand the expectations for the school year.”
The core intent of advisory will remain the same, but students will see changes as they enter the new school year.
“Advisory will be the same structure as in the past,” Harris said. “The only difference is we will have closed advisory every Friday. On Fridays there will be different…advisory lessons for students.”
For many students, advisory is a time to catch up on school work and finish pending assignments.
“For me, advisory is really important to finish work that I had in class,” sophomore Dhillan Desai said. “Whenever I’m halfway through a slideshow or assignment, I find it better to finish it up in advisory rather than take it home.”
For some students, starting open advisory later in the year is a logical decision that doesn’t really change much.
“I understand why a lot of students might feel upset about not having advisory on the first day of school, but I think it is beneficial for incoming freshmen or students new to the district,” junior Mahi Kosuri said. “This will allow them to understand the rules and expectations of Liberty, I think. Personally, it doesn’t make a difference, as classes don’t pick up pace till September.”
Advisory also serves as a time for students to hang out with friends and take a break, leading others to wish that open advisories started earlier.
“I’m glad it’s starting as early as possible, but I wish it started on the first day so I could see the friends I don’t have in my classes,” Desai said. ” My favorite part of advisory is going to the library where Ms. Hamilton usually has a puzzle set out for people to do. That’s a really fun time to do something non-class related with my friends”
