Students, teachers, and administrators all over the district arrived onto campus Wednesday morning with no access to the Wi-Fi or internet and while short-term internet outages are not uncommon, however, the Wi-Fi outage is currently in its fifth hour.
In an email sent by Frisco ISD, it was confirmed that the outage was caused by a cut fiber cable on Main Street in Downtown Frisco where there is ongoing construction. Principal Stacy Whaling concedes that power outages are always a possibility.
“Yeah, I think that, you know, everybody knows that there’s always a chance that they can go out,” Whaling said. “So, you know, being able to pivot and do something that’s, you know, just as authentic, but maybe on paper is just always a possibility. So I think just being ready for that at all times.”
For American Studies teacher Whitney Schell, the outage caused inconveniences regarding the academic schedule.
“This morning I thought ‘Oh no, we’re supposed to be doing an assessment on Canvas’,” Schell said. “We were unable to have the pre-planned lesson because the kids were supposed to be able to go on to Canvas, look at two different speeches, compare and contrast, and then analyze them.”
Senior Matthew Hung, felt the pressure in AP classes.
“In economics we had an assessment on Canvas that we couldn’t do,” Hung said. “It was hard because we had to learn stuff but our teacher couldn’t access the slides and he had to print off the quiz last minute.”
Frisco ISD assured parents and teachers via the email that the lack of internet wouldn’t affect campus security, and the district is working to bring back campuses online. The district, however, will not be sending students home for the day, and expect the internet to be up again by Thursday.
