Frisco adds another red-light camera
November 1, 2016
The city of Frisco has installed a new red-light safety camera at the intersection of Preston Road and Warren Parkway. This camera is another addition to the red light safety camera program that first launched in February 2011.
“This will be our fifth red light safety camera in Frisco, and we are hoping that it is successful like the others have been in reducing crashes,” Frisco PD Deputy Chief David Shilson said in a press release. “At the Preston and Warren intersection we have seen 60 crashes in the past five years. We want to lower those numbers, and photo enforcement is one option we use to do that.”
The installation of the new camera comes with a 30-day warning period and although fines are not issued during this time, the camera will capture pictures and videos of the backs of vehicles running the light, which will be sent to the Frisco Police Department to determine whether a citation is necessary.
“People don’t like getting ticketed but these cameras are important because we have such a huge amount of accidents at these major intersections,” School Resource Officer Glen Hubbard said. “The cameras will help to slow people down.”
The cameras are intended to reduce accidents and speeding, and promote the safety of drivers who could be injured by those running lights.
“As a traffic engineer who has analyzed traffic crashes, traffic operations and traffic safety measures for the past fifteen years, I can truly say that red light enforcement cameras are one of the most effective measures to reducing the severity and number of crashes involving red light running,” Frisco Citizen Advisory Committee on Photo Enforcement member Sean Merrell said in a press release. “These cameras save lives!”
