Say it Louder: spring break a little early
February 27, 2017
With spring break coming up next week, students are beginning to grow more and more excited for the week long break we get from school. Whether you’re going on vacation or just hanging out at home, it’s a good way to get student’s mind off of the stress of school. However, the fact that spring break is quite early in the year gives students a long time of no breaks until summer in June.
It has been announced that they are going to make spring break a week later next year, but it’s still pretty soon. I have family who lives in Maryland and their spring break isn’t until April, and I think that makes a bit more sense. That way, after winter break they wait a few months, have their spring break and then just wait a couple months until they’re off for the summer. With the way our spring break is placed, we don’t have to wait too long after winter break but we will have three months after spring break until summer. Of course I’m happy to have a break, but I just think it would be more practical if it took place later in the spring.
Another downside to the timing of the break and most others is that it is right around the end of the marking period. That being said, almost every core class will be more than likely to give out some sort of quiz or assessment the week before spring break. Student’s minds tend to be a little off track the week before a break, so they might not perform to the best of their potential on their tests and/or quizzes.
The timing of spring break may be a slight disadvantage to some, but overall the break is a blessing. The stress of school can really mess with student’s heads and the fact that we get periodic breaks throughout the year makes us lucky.
