The girls’ golf team nearly pulled off a rare feat in the District 13-5A tournament at The Bridges Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday as it just missed sending both its red and black teams to the regional tournament. While the red team wrapped up its fourth straight district championship, the black team finished in third place, one spot from advancing.

“The girls did really well, they played pretty much according to form,” head coach Shannon Glidwell said. “It was difficult the first day, because some of them finished all 18 holes, but some almost finished, but because of the weather they washed the scores so it was difficult for them because they played really well.”

Individually, senior Darby Deans took first place, being the first player in school history to shoot under par, with senior Loren Matrone and juniors Sarah Buss and Rakhi Shah tying for third.

“It was really exciting to be able to win because I wanted to do that back to back,” Deans said. “It was really cool to shoot under par because I’d been trying to do that both days and the second day I finally did.”

The girls’ red team advances to the 5A Region II tournament at the Rockwall Golf and Athletic Club April 24-25.

“We are going to take a few days off,” Glidwell said. “Most of them will be playing in tournaments over the holiday so they will get some practice in before we come back and work really hard the next week.”
