October 5, 2015
With over 50 clubs in the school there are many to pick out of; varying from every interest such as Chess Club to Engineering Club. But for students who have special interest in art, NAHS may be the place for you.
Wingspan sat down with the NAHS club leader Pernie Fallon to see what she had to say on her art organization.
Wingspan: What exactly is NAHS?
Fallon: “NAHS stands for National Art Honor Society, and we make visual arts more visible in our school, in our community. Creative thinking is really important in at the core of of any kind of learning and NAHS helps bring that forward.”
Wingspan: What requirements are needed to join NAHS?
Fallon: “To join NAHS you have to pay dues of $15. It is open to any student who is interested in art, whether you appreciate art, or whether you make art. You gotta be willing to complete 15 hours of service in visual arts and 10 of those are through NAHS and 5 of those may be elsewhere. So you have to attend meetings to maintain membership and privileges and then you have to be an active participant in the activities and fundraisers, and the last requirement is that you must be passing in all your classes.”
Wingspan: What is NAHS currently doing and why?
Fallon: “We will soon be working on the empty bowls project were we create bowls to help feed the hungry. We’ll be doing trunk or treat and we’ll also be doing a origami swan project for the Children’s Hospital.”
Wingspan: Are there any other projects that you are planning to do other than those?
Fallon: “We will participate in the Frisco Arts in the Square as volunteers and as artists and we a lot of times we’ll take a field trip.”
Wingspan: What kind of people would you think would enjoy being part of NAHS?
Fallon: “We have such a broad group of people that are in NAHS. Almost everyone can find an activity or some area that they would like to participate in. We have a number of different activities that appeal to everyone. Even if you don’t think you’re good at art, but like art, you would enjoy this. If you’re good at art, it’s another opportunity to make things and create art.”
Wingspan: What would you say to encourage students to join NAHS?
Fallon: “I would say that we have a very vivacious club. We have a lot of fun. Our dues are only $15 and for that you get a t-shirt, you get a field trip, you get a couple of events where we have food and it’s really, it’s really a good organization. It’s a great way to get to know people that you otherwise not get to know during the school year.”
Wingspan: How do you think NAHS benefits our school?
Fallon: “NAHS benefits our school by making the art more visible by making art more known and also teaches those who might not have a chance to take art classes learn about art. And when you learn and appreciate art, you have a broader world view and it just build over into everything that you do.”
Wingspan: Can NAHS make a difference in students lives?
Fallon: “I believe it does. I believe it gives them a better appreciation of art. It teaches them how to work with other students that they might not know. It teaches teamwork, it teaches a celebration of cultures and differences and I believe in a roundabout way it teaches tolerance and all of those are really important.”
Wingspan: What do you like most about NAHS and why?
Fallon: “Well of course it involves art so that’s why I like it. And the main reason I like it is the wonderful students that participate in it and I’ve got to know a lot of students I wouldn’t know otherwise. There are scholarship opportunities available from the national region or the National chapter of the National Art Honors Society to any student who is a member.”
