AP classes, post exams

Due to starting the 2018-2019 school year earlier in August, the end of the semester coincides with the start of winter break for the first time in years. While some students find this beneficial, others believe that it adds pressure for students to finish assignments.

AP testing ended Friday and now it’s time for many AP classes to switch gears.

“We focus less on mastery of the subject matter,” AP Government teacher Kristin Lynch said. “It’s more about the innovation and creativity that can be expressed in showing mastery.”

Along with a change in how students are learning, they will also be seeing a change in the topics they will be studying.

“Topics definitely change after the AP exam,” Lynch said. “I begin to spend time preparing the kids for college and helping them explore their passions and interests. Each day we do short Q&As where we cover topics about college, dorms, sports, clubs and Greek life.”

The amount of work students will be expected to do will also change after the exam.

“Students will not have the same workload as they did before,” AP US History teacher Alyssa Webb said. “At this point in the year most of our work will be done in class.”

Because of the stress that can come with any AP class, many students are looking forward to the lighter workload.

“[I’m excited] because the class-load has been a lot to handle,” freshman Siya Sakhardande said. “I’m ready for the testing to be over.”

While there is no doubt students are excited for testing to be over, they aren’t the only ones.

“This is actually one of my favorite times of the year,” Lynch said. “You can feel the excitement of the seniors as they finish their final AP exams and prepare for college.”
