Stop relying on the retest

AP Psychology students prepare to retest.

It’s never the end of the world when you fail a test as you can always retest. Even though retesting can’t bring your grade all the way up to 100, a retest can bring it back to a satisfactory level. All you have to do is study more and go for another try, but does retesting really help the students or is it just a way to make our grades look decent.

Simply knowing the fact that after failing a test there’s a retest already fixes the student’s mindset. The thought process would be that it’s alright to not study and fail the first test because there’s always a retest later that can change the grade. If they are happy with their grade on their first test then they won’t retest, but if they’re grade is not so good, they’ll just go for the retest.

But if students were not allowed to retest then maybe they’ll study harder the first time and possibly get a higher score on the first test. Teachers give the students time to study in class and out of class before a test, and the students that take advantage of the retesting don’t use that time properly and waste it. The teacher basically spends time reviewing for the students and giving them time to prepare just so they could fail the test and simply retest.

Having the option to retest doesn’t allow the students to get the experience of failing. The reality is that in life everyone will fail at some point and we’ll just have to accept it. Learning comes in from how you deal with it and adjust. Giving students the chance to retake a test for a better grade just spoils the student. When the student becomes an adult and finds a job, their bosses aren’t always going to give them a second chance when they fail.

If students have the choice to retake a test they’ll always depend on the retest to help them. It might fix their current grade but in the long run, it won’t be a benefit. There should be no reason for a retest if the student studies hard before the actual test and pass it, instead of relying on the retest.
