Despite the week long break from academics over Thanksgiving, both the girls’ and boys’ basketball teams, along with the wrestling program will either be competing in tournaments or practice over break.

Thanksgiving break provides a week off from school, but not from basketball, as both teams are practicing or playing with the boys’ playing in the Lone Star Classic on Monday and Tuesday.

“Usually over break, you’d think nobody wants to work on their game, they just want to chill, but that gives us a head start into our next games coming up to make sure we’re still conditioned and still in shape,” senior Zion Richardson said. “I feel really confident coming into this tournament that we should be successful. We have prepared by every day in practice making sure to go through our plays, run our stuff, make sure we’re all on the same page on what we’re learning and trying to do.”

Facing off against previously ranked 6A schools like Jesuit and Prosper, head coach Stephen Friar sees the tournament as a way to bring the team closer.

“It’s a good chance for us to play a lot of games in a short amount of time, so it’s really good for our team to gel and work through some things we need to work on,” Friar said. “We’ve prepared by working hard everyday in practice and make we do the things we’ve coached to do.”

On the girls’ side of the court, the Redhawks compete against DeSoto on Tuesday at The Nest.

“Obviously we want to win against a really good DeSoto team, but also we want to go out there and play for each other,” senior Makenzi Glover said. “With districts just around the corner we’re hoping to go in with tons of confidence and energy.”

Currently posting up against 6A teams in Allen High School’s annual Hoopfest, Glover sees this tournament as preparation for the game against the Eagles, as well as upcoming district play.

“The Allen tournament that we’re currently playing in will help us for our game against DeSoto just by getting touches on the ball; this tournament is filled with a bunch of great teams so just by playing good competition we should hopefully be ready,” senior Makenzi Glover said. “To mentally prepare for a game during break I just have to stay focused on the task at hand. The basketball team doesn’t get much of a ‘break’ anyways, but keeping in mind what the goal is and how we plan to achieve it is a big deal.”
