Varsity winter guard wraps up the season with their show Lucy at the NTCA Championships at Flower Mound High School, Sunday starting at 9 a.m.

“This is their last show of the season and it’s a circuit championship, so they get to compete against all the other guards in their class,” director Eric Mills said. “They got reclassified from scholastic to national at the Southwest Power Regionals because of their performance, which was not necessarily expected but we knew it could be a possibility.”

Getting reclassified means tougher competition, but that’s not a concern to captain Sydney Graff.

“We got bumped up to National A and so overall I think it is really such a cool opportunity,” Graff said. “We aren’t competing as much as we are just doing it for ourselves and trying to have fun. Also it’s a really exciting way to end the season.”

Mills emphasizes that it’s not about who wins or loses but that the squad doesn’t forget to love what they do and feel good about what they have achieved.

It’s advice senior Kynsie Shumway takes to heart.

“Championships is super fun because its our last competition and it’s a really great way to end our show,” she said. “We get to and take lots of fun pictures and everyone gets to go down for awards and it’s so fun to celebrate with everyone. Just in general being around everyone and meeting people, it’s really the people that make the experience so great.”
