Sunday’s Dallas Marathon will feature thousands of runners including AP US history teacher Sam Young who is running to raise money for the non-profit organization For the Nations: Refugee Outreach.

“I  used to intern with the organization since college,” Young said. “They offer a many great classes for refugees like job skill training and teaching children to speak English as well as adults.”

Young began training months ago, running whenever he could.

“It’s just a lot of running and a lot of time,” Young said. “ I try to do three to four shorter runs during the week and one long one during the weekend, but it is just a lot of work to do during the week.”

Young and his friends’ goal for running the marathon was $5 per mile and they meet their goal and more.

“My buddies and I, they work for the organization, we started a Facebook page to get people to donate,” Young said. “We reached our goal with $500 in total meaning $5 per mile, and we also had a generous donor who said that he would match all of the donations.”
