The new year brings new classes for some Redhawks, as students who were enrolled in single-semester classes last fall transition into their spring courses. The change brings new teachers, new content to cover, and new classmates for many.

Spanish 2 teachers have created a new unit that is utilizing world events as the basis for learning.

“The health unit for Spanish 2 in particular is focused on making healthy choices and staying healthy during this quarantine,” Spanish teacher Ashli Taquino said. “It is a 3 week unit and is very relevant to the pandemic we are currently in. The resources we have supplied students include general information on COVID-19, as well as health information that includes both physical and mental health.”

Freshman Kennedy Stevens is enjoying this unit because it allows her to apply what she’s learned to what is going on currently.

“I like learning how we can take care of ourselves and learning about things we can do during quarantine,” Stevens said. “We can apply it to the real world by doing the things we learn about in real life and telling other people how to be healthy and safe.”

Hoping their students are able to take something out of the new unit, Taquino wants to teach students to make the right choices concerning their health while they stay at home.

“We hope that students incorporate these healthy choices as they are quarantined at home and share them with family members,” Taquino said. “Making healthy choices, both mentally and physically, is something extremely applicable at this time. Our learning targets are that the students can identify these choices through reading and listening sources, and that they can also produce advice on healthy choices through speaking and writing.”
