New guidelines lead to changes in practices

With almost every aspect of the school year looking different then last year, sports are no exception.
“Practices this year are very different because we have to be very cautious and aware of how we act due to Corona,” senior, volleyball player, Caitlyn Brown said. “We are only allowed a limited amount of time to play and condition each day, so when we’re in the gym we need to practice intensely in order to make use of the time we have.”
Even with golf being one of the only UIL sports to be able to continue for a while last spring, golfers are continuing to make their practices safer.
“The girls and boys are now separate so we are in the morning now and we can’t all gather around so we are in smaller groups doing drills” senior, golfer, Raeleigh Davidson said. ‘I think it’s safe during practice because it’s not a contact sport so we don’t have to touch or be very close to others. Plus the whole sport as a whole added new rules to make sure no one touches the same things such as the flag stick stays in the hole at all times and rakes for the bunker are removed therefore we don’t even touch the same things as others.”
For some players, like senior soccer player Avery Jennings, the hopes of being able to have a season are encouraging enough to follow new protocol.
“We are taking social distancing and mask wearing very seriously during practice,” Jennings said. “We also have temperature checks. Coach Beggs is really good about reminding us that we have to practice these things if we want to play in 4 months.”
Although following the guidelines is not ideal, players understand it’s what must be done.
“I myself feel safe during practice because everyone around me does the best they can to follow the rules in place,” Brown said. “However, it can be difficult at times to remain socially distant after we play, and it can definitely be a struggle sometimes to wear a mask when we’re conditioning, but in order to keep others safe these rules must be followed.”
