Students get ready for Labor Day weekend
September 3, 2020
It’s a four day weekend for students with Friday being a staff development day for teachers, with Monday being a school holiday in recognition of Labor Day. But for some on campus, the reason for the holiday is unknown.
“Labor Day is only special to me because of the day we get off,” sophomore Sadhana Dharmmireddy said. “Usually my family and I travel to some city but this year we are probably just going to a restaurant downtown. I never knew what [Labor Day] is there for, however, but I think that it has to do something with labor workers. ”
Occuring on the first Monday in September to recognize the economic and social
achievements of workers in America, Labor Day began as a labor movement in the late 19th century, but it got nationally recognized which led it to become a federal holiday in 1894.
“Labor Day means to give all the people who work so hard for our economy, a day off,” sophomore Pratham Shah said. “It’s a day to celebrate themselves and spend the rest of their day with their families. My family and I don’t celebrate it, per say, but we do enjoy the time we have off by relaxing.”
Taking advantage of the long weekend, junior Meghana Manwadkar, will go with the rest of her team to take team pictures.
“This weekend, [the volleyball] team and I are taking advantage of the long weekend and we are going to meet and take our official varsity poster photos for this school year,” Manwadkar said. I’m not sure what people even celebrate this day for, to be honest, but I am celebrating it with my family and having a small barbecue.”
