A battle for first at the Nest
January 26, 2016
The girls’ and boys’ basketball teams will be competing for the top spot in District 9-5A Tuesday night at The Nest as both teams will take on Little Elm, which pits the top two teams in the district for both girls’ and boys’ basketball.
The girls’ basketball team comes in on an eight game winning streak in district, avenging their only district loss with a 40-25 defeat of Wakeland on Jan. 19. The team has a 9-1 district record, but have the Lobos (10-2), and Centennial on their tail (9-2) as the second round of the district play continues.
The girls defeated Little Elm 44-30 earlier this season but that game will mean nothing come tip-off.
“I think that other than having some confidence in that we feel like we have had some success, we know we can get the job done as long as we go out and execute,” girls’ head basketball coach Ross Reedy said. “Other than that it was no impact. They’ve been really hot over the past month and fortunately we have been playing really well too. Hate to be cliche but it’s a new game and I’m sure they’ll have made adjustments and are prepared, just as we have.”
The boys’ team also plays in a game with first place implications. With the team’s bye on Friday, the boys enter Tuesday’s game a half game behind the Lobos. The Little Elm boys basketball team has not dropped a game since their 68-48 loss to the Redhawks on Dec. 15.
The Lobos are coming into the game ranked #18 in the TABC Rankings, riding an eight game winning streak.
“I feel really good about the matchup,” boys’ head basketball coach Marcus Eckert said. “We’ve had great practices on Thursday and Friday, and had a bye on Friday, allowing them to rest and recuperate and keep them fresh. We had a good practice yesterday. I feel really good about the effort and execution that we will see tonight.”
