Freshmen across district get personal Chromebooks
September 22, 2020
This year, Frisco ISD launched its 1-to-1 initiative in which all freshman get their own Chromebook to use for their high school career.
“Our district is going one to one, meaning ideally every student has a Chromebook as a computer, every day to do their assignments in class,” digital learning coach Clayton Pope said. “The idea is when 2023 arrives this year’s freshman will be seniors at that point all four grade levels of liberty will have Chromebooks. Some schools are doing freshman, sophomore, and juniors, whereas we are just the freshman cycle.”
In years past teachers could check out a cart full of Chromebooks for occasional classroom use, but now that all freshmen have their own device, teachers are learning to adjust to daily technology use.
“There’s a lot of learning curves that come with transitioning the way we learn, even just the way we read a sentence on the screen versus a paper is different, or the way you turn things in now,” biology teacher Chris Ham said. “So everything is fundamentally changed, which means there’s a learning curve for me, their teacher, and for the students as well.”
For freshmen such as Trevor Noon, the Chromebooks are an especially useful tool right now.
“Well, it’s really good to get Chromebooks this year, [since] I know a lot of people who don’t have devices at home and some people don’t have devices to do work on and for some people who are doing virtual, they need this Chromebooks to join zoom meetings and do all their work,” Noon said. “Even if you are in school we haven’t been doing much stuff on paper so it’s nice to get a Chromebook and get that second type of learning in using all the stuff on the Chromebook.”
