Acoustic Avenue: Savage Mode II review
October 19, 2020
The wait is finally over. Savage Mode II by Metro Boomin and 21 Savage is finally here and it was worth the wait. The first Savage Mode was an incredible album and expectations for Savage Mode II were very high. Those expectations, however, were exceeded.
In comparison to the first Savage Mode album, this new one is a lot faster and has more tracks than the last one. Savage Mode II has some of the best chill and old school vibes than any other modern hip hop album.
The tone of this album is carefree and, well, savage. In the first album, 21 Savage sounded almost sad in all of the tracks, and the slow beat made it even more evident that it wasn’t a happy album. This new one, however, shows 21’s character development. He cares a lot less about what people think of him now. He even refers to the scandal concerning his potential deportation. The hearing was set to be on April 9, 2019, but was postponed indefinitely after he was arrested by ICE on February 3, 2019, for allegedly overstaying his visa.
One of the best parts of this album is that it is narrated by Morgan Freeman. I never would’ve expected Morgan Freeman to narrate any album ever, and when I heard he would narrate this one, I was a little skeptical. But, I was pleasantly surprised when I listened to the album and to Freeman’s narration. It tells the story of the album and gives the transitions that key ingredient for a good album.
I struggled coming up with a top-three but here they are: “Runnin,” “Many Men,” and “Rip Luv.” These three are just too good. “Runnin” just gives such carefree vibes and makes you feel so good. There isn’t a better way to explain it. It just is what it is. “Many Men” is so good. I love the transition into it and the transition out of it. It’s so old school because it has many of the components of older hip hop albums.
The reference to 50 Cent is only made better when you find out that 50 actually helped write it and has a small part towards the end. You wouldn’t be able to tell it was him unless you listened to any of his old music. “Rip Luv” is another incredible track on this album. Savage talks about what I assume was his ex-girlfriend and how their relationship was and how it ended. It can be a very relatable song to anyone who has experienced something similar to what he describes in the song.
This album is a 10/10. I love it so much. It is clear that both Metro Boomin and 21 Savage studied the game and put their heart and soul into creating this album. As annoying as the wait was, I am so glad now that they took their time creating this masterpiece. It’s got its element of seduction and nostalgia that I adore. They outdid themselves with this one.
