Acoustic Avenue: Ariana Grande’s sixth studio album
November 9, 2020
Miss Ariana Grande is back again with her sixth studio album Positions. I was honestly not expecting her to drop an album so soon after Thank U, Next. I thought her decision to drop it was a bit rushed and my expectations were kind of low for this album. I have listened to it in its entirety and I feel like I might have been right.
I’m not going to say it is a bad album because it isn’t. There are some songs on it that I really like. What I enjoy about this album is that you can see how Ariana has changed since her life was flipped upside down by tragedy. It is a very healing album full of joy. I also love that she was the engineer on this album and was responsible for all of the vocals including background. It’s got some good beats throughout it but they aren’t the best. I do like that she worked with producers she has never worked with before and went out of her comfort zone.
The mood throughout this album is very seductive. There is a lot of love going on throughout the album. It is probably her most explicit album ever. As someone who has listened to her music for a long time, it was definitely weird for me to hear her say certain things on certain songs. A common theme amongst all of her albums since Yours Truly. There is a storyline that flows from one album to the next. In that regard, I think this album continued the story from Thank U, Next very well.
It was a lot simpler to choose a top three from this album since I am not a fan of a lot of the songs: “pov,” “safety net” featuring Ty Dolla $ign, and “off the table” featuring The Weeknd.
“pov” is one of my favorites because it’s something I can relate to. This song is about loving and trusting yourself the way that your partner does. It’s all self love and I am here for it. Not to mention, the vocals on this song are crazy. “safety net” is another one of my favorites because it is another relatable song. I don’t relate to it the way other people do because for me it isn’t about love. This song, to me, is about having confidence and doing things knowing there is a possibility you could fail. It is about taking a leap of faith knowing there is no safety net there to catch you if you fail. It is a very important message about having confidence in yourself.
Finally is “off the table.” This song is so beautiful. I love it because it is not only a perfect sequel to “Love Me Harder” also featuring The Weeknd, but it is something I can deeply sympathize with. For me this song is about trust issues and I can really relate to it because it is that feeling of doubt that happens when you go through something traumatizing. You don’t know if you deserve to feel happiness again or a little bit of joy because you have this nagging feeling of guilt and, for lack of a better word, darkness looming over you.
Though I enjoy these songs and a few others, there were some that felt like place holders and didn’t really fit in the album like “six thirty” and “west side.”
I think that if Ariana had taken some more time to make this album then it would have been better. And while I am glad she went out of her comfort zone and felt a sense of healing by putting this album together, I don’t like the repetitive nature of the tracks. They all sound the same or very similar to one another. I would honestly only recommend this album to people because I am a huge fan of hers, but honestly this album is just not it.
