Frisco Notecard Project comes to a close

Time runs out on Sunday for National Honors Society members in the Frisco Notecard Project, which involves students receiving one hour of service time for every 5 to 10 notecards students created, with the cards being delivered later to nursing homes in the area.

The project was a way for NHS members to volunteer while facing social distancing guidelines.

“I think it’s definitely really important to give students non in-person volunteer opportunities,” project organizer Shiori Harima said. “Just because everyone is staying home, it doesn’t mean the community’s needs have disappeared. Rather, they have increased.”

Students feel the burden that COVID-19 has placed on the community and are aware that the load has been especially heavy for senior citizens.

“I have heard from the nursing homes that the senior citizens really enjoyed the cards and felt cared for, which is really nice to hear,” Harima said. “It’s always good to hear that your work is actually making a difference.”

Students such as Ritu Baraddi have joined the project for similar reasons, believing that helping the community now means more than ever.

“In the time we’re living in it’s hard to be around people, especially the elderly, and so it feels really great to make cards for them,” Baraddi said.  “I feel like making these notecards is just a kind way to communicate with them and let them know they’re not forgotten.”
