Upcoming senior events make way for graduation

Like the graduation ceremony in 2020, graduates will be responsible for getting themselves to commencement ceremonies. Unlike the event last year, the 2021 ceremony will be held at The Ford Center at The Star, rather than Toyota Stadium.

A little over three months until they cross the stage and toss their caps into the air, seniors have various events to look forward to in the upcoming weeks.

“I feel like it hasn’t felt like senior year but it has gone by relatively fast,” senior Sara Aldana said. “And that is all we could hope for.”

The Boots & BBQ Bash, Powder Puff games, Color War, the Baccalaureate, and the Senior Sunset Casino Style are all events the PTSA is putting on leading up to the graduation ceremony on May 23.

“I really appreciate the PTSA events because they are really trying to give us the best possible year that we can have while being COVID safe,” senior Rachel Wilson said. “The events are fantastic but I don’t believe they have made senior year worthwhile because the struggle of online learning, staggered passing periods, social distancing, and college applications has been very difficult and little can be done to make it any better while being COVID safe.”

As for graduation, it will be held at The Ford Center at The Star, with each graduate receiving six tickets. Students will be responsible for getting themselves to the ceremony, and once they arrive will be assisted by staff in finding a seat, but they will not line up in alphabetical order and there won’t be a processional.

“I am really hoping for graduation to be normal and hope that it gets to be like a typical graduation,” Wilson said. “This is something we have been waiting for since we started school and to go without it would be weird.”

Looking ahead, Aldana hopes she and her classmates can experience a senior year staple.

“I really hope we could have prom and senior week but as long as we have a relatively normal graduation would be fun,” Aldana said. “I also really liked the idea of having a poker night where we can win dorm essentials.”
