Demi Lovato has been in the public eye since she was a kid. We watched her grow up on Disney Channel from Camp Rock to Sonny with a Chance to Princess Protection Program. Throughout all of this, Demi has excelled in his musical career. She has had some tough moments in her life and has come out of them stronger than ever. Her new album Dancing With The Devil…The Art of Starting Over is a testament to her strength and determination to help herself and strive to be better.

My favorites off of this album are “Dancing With The Devil,” “Met Him Last Night” featuring Ariana Grande, and “My Girlfriends Are my Boyfriend” featuring Saweetie. “Dancing With The Devil” is a really beautiful and healing song. On the track, Demi is speaking to God and asking him for forgiveness for “dancing with the devil” and “gambling with her soul.” She goes into further detail when she says that she “almost made it to heaven, it was closer than you know.” Anyone who pays attention to celebrity news knows that Demi has had a lot of problems with drug addiction and overdoses. She almost died after she overdosed one night and suffered some brain damage from the experience. This song is clearly very personal to her and necessary to her healing process.

“Met Him Last Night” is another song that can be interpreted in different ways. It’s about having met the devil and ultimately falling in love with him. The way in which I interpret this song is through the trauma that Demi experienced in her life with drugs and Ariana’s trauma from the Manchester bombing at one of her concerts in 2017. Though it isn’t very clear what Ariana’s coping mechanisms were, she radiates a feeling of desperation in this song alongside Demi. Apart from having a deeper meaning, at face value, the song is really appealing and sonically gorgeous. Their voices mix really well together.

“My Girlfriends Are My Boyfriends” is a really empowering and feminist song. Demi shows her love to her circle of close friends by expressing her appreciation for their loyalty. I love this song because it’s empowering to so many women and girls around the world and it shows them that they don’t need a man to feel valued. Saweetie’s verse on this song is one of my favorites because it also expresses her appreciation for her friends’ loyalty and love. This is a man’s world but this song really shows that women don’t need men to matter or sustain them.

I really enjoyed this album and I believe that Demi is on the road to healing. This album is a testament to her stamina and strength and I wish her nothing but the best in her life.
