Placing 7th overall at the regional academic meet for 5A UIL Region II, Redhawks students faced 36 schools and earned the highest finish by a Frisco ISD school.

“I’m extremely excited for these students and coaches, especially after UIL Academic meets were cancelled last year due to the pandemic,” campus UIL Academic Coordinator Courtney Benson said. “Everyone adapted amazingly well to all of the changes for this years’ meets, and still managed to pull off one of the best performances Liberty has had at the regional level in the last few years. This is just a testament to the resilience and talent of our students and their coaches.”

Junior Trisha Dasgupta is the first journalism student from the school to make it to state, qualifying in both Feature Writing and Editorial Writing.

“It’s really cool to have placed in both events,” Dasgupta said. “I never thought I had a chance, especially given how tough our region is in general, so it definitely took me by surprise. I’m super proud of my teammates for our district win, and I’m looking forward to representing Wingspan at state.

Even though the journalism team won the District 9-5A championship, coach Brian Higgins didn’t have set expectations.

“Our region is super strong overall, and journalism is no different, so getting to state is a big accomplishment in one event, but getting there in two events is even more impressive,” he said. “This is probably the strongest team I have had, so I was hopeful someone would get to state, but journalism contests are so subjective, I wasn’t going to take anything for granted.”
