For the first time in school history the girls’ basketball team is heading to State. But to get there, they had to go through Mansfield’s top schools including the previously undefeated and top ranked team in the state, Mansfield Timberview.

Taking on Timberview Thursday in Garland, the girls weren’t intimidated and it showed early as they trailed by just one after the first. That would be the last time they would trail at a break as they took a 27-23 lead at the half.

From there, the girls slowly added to their lead and brought an end to Timberview’s perfect season 62-51.

That set up a regional final showdown with Mansfield’s second best team Summit. Summit jumped out to a 11-4 lead after one, but the girls’ would close that gap to just three points heading into the third quarter.

Using a big third quarter run, the girls took the lead after three and held on for the win 42-39 punching their first ticket to State semifinals where they play Cedar Park Vista Ridge Thursday night at 8:30 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Hoping to join the girls at state, the boys basketball team. Taking on the area’s 10th ranked team Rockwall-Heath, the boys found themselves down early, trailing 28-22 at the half. But the team cranked up the defensive pressure in the second half forcing numerous turnovers that allowed the team to flourish on offense, outscoring Rockwall-Health 50-26 for the 72-54 win.

Next up for the guys, Centennial tomorrow night in Lewisville at 7:00.

In other sports action, the boys’ soccer team took on undefeated and number two state-ranked Wakeland in a District 9-5A game Friday night but this one was all Wakeland as they netted the 5-0 win, leaving the team with a 5-5 district record for the season.

While the boys took a loss, the girls pulled out a win against Wakeland 1-0 with the lone goal by Madi Timmons. Both the boys and girls will take on Frisco at Toyota Stadium on Tuesday with the girls at 5:30 and the boys to follow at 7:30 p.m.
