Girls’ basketball extinguish Trail Blazers hopes for a win
December 8, 2021
The Redhawks girls’ basketball team faced off against the Lebanon Trail Trail Blazers in a District 9-5A game Tuesday night 46-19.
“I’m really quite pleased because through three quarters they had 8 points,” head coach Ross Reedy said. “We didn’t give them anything easy. We played true to our assignments for the most part we got a little relaxed, a little carried away in the fourth quarter.”
Along with an outstanding defensive performance the Redhawks crashed the glass hard, finishing with 55 team rebounds for the game.
“We knew we had a size advantage so one of the things we wanted to do was take advantage of it,” Reedy said. “We may have not have been able to take advantage of it offensively, but we took advantage of it on rebounds. We had an ungodly amount of offensive rebounds. Our offensive rebound percentage was something like 90%. That means every ten misses we rebounded nine of them and those numbers may be skewed but anytime you are above 50% your having a good day, a great day actually.”
Senior Kamen Wong got the RedHawks off to a fast start, knocking down two triples to put the team up 8-0 in the first quarter..
“Going into the game, we were all locked in and focused,” Wong said. “After making an 8-0 run at the beginning of the game, our energy only got better. Especially after Jazzy’s charge, I think that everyone got a boost of confidence which allowed us to continue pushing the pedal for the rest of the game.”
After back to back steals from junior Jezelle Jolie Moreno and senior Jazzy Owens-Barnett, the Redhawks were able to give themselves a 13-point lead (14-1) to start the second quarter.
The Redhawks went several more runs, eventually pulling out to 40-8 lead with 6:54 left to go in the fourth quarter.
“They had an 11 point 4th quarter which wasn’t what we wanted in the situation but we were able to finish the game out,” Reedy said.
Tuesday’s win leaves the team 3-0 in district play, but according to Reedy, there’s still room for improvement.
“That was encouraging,” Reedy said. “We still need to get better, when the margin increases we want to make sure that we are still getting better.”
