The chance to make state is on the line Friday and Saturday when eight Redhawks wrestlers head to Memorial High School for the UIL Region II tournament, where the top four from each weight category advance to state.

“For regionals I would like to hopefully have more than three state qualifiers,” junior Mercede Alvarez said via text. “I expect for me and De’Leon to take first.”

Alvarez and senior De’leon Freeman both won district championships and could be among the favorites at the regional tournament.

Senior Cole Hebert, who placed 2nd at the district level, shares a common focus with Alvarez and Freeman. For him, advancing to state means to focus on perfected technique:

“In terms of technique, it’s about sticking to everything we’ve been taught over the years,” Hebert said. “We really want to get after it and rely on our gas tanks. The plan is to get everyone to state. We think we can win it.”
