After nearly a month break, STAAR testing resumes Tuesday and Wednesday with teachers implementing a variety of strategies to help get students ready.

“We are doing practice questions, and a lot of different review activities involving those practice questions,” math teacher Julia Coday said. “Most days I have been starting out class with test taking tips/strategy talk.”

Lily Kaiser, a sophomore, finds that reviewing depends more on the teachers.

“I think most teachers try to cover the main topics on the STAAR but it honestly depends on the teacher and the subject,” Kaiser said. “Like for English, I didn’t really feel prepared because my teacher didn’t review with us at all. But in Biology the review seems pretty good.”

However, the preparation the teachers provided is substantial enough for freshman Melisa Gulver.

“I think that teachers do prepare us enough for the STAAR test/EOC,” Gulver said. “Most teachers assign things to help the class review previous content and remember the beginning of the year’s content which I find helpful.”

But no matter how much they prepare, the STAAR can be challenging since students and teachers don’t know what each question is going to consist of.

“The hardest part about preparing for the EOC is that we are being tested on the entire year’s content,” Gulver said. “There is a broad variety that we learn in a school year and recalling some of the things that we learned at the very beginning of the year can be really difficult.”

As far as last minute advice goes, Coday encourages students to use test taking strategies they have been taught.

“Utilize the test taking strategies we have reviewed over the past few classes,” Coday said. “One important one for a STAAR test, since it is mostly multiple choice, would be the process of elimination.”
