Released last year, the movie Free Guy, starring Ryan Reynolds, follows the story of a video game character who becomes aware that he is in a game, causing drama both within his game world and the world outside.

While the film can boast a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, many people, including myself, were unaware of the film’s quality due to preconceptions we had about it. From the trailers, it seemed that Free Guy would be a film full of corporate greed, gratuitous cameos, and an underwhelming story. Perhaps the greatest contributor to these doubts was Ready Player One, a film of a somewhat similar nature that failed for the same reasons previously mentioned.

However, while the film does feature many cameos, particularly in its third act, the film is completely aware of what it is, and the story of the film is unique and compelling. It is clear audiences love the movie, and I highly recommend people who haven’t seen it drop their preconceptions and watch it.
