Journalism students throughout the district are putting their skills to the test in the 2nd Annual Frisco ISD Journalism Competition at the CTE Center Tuesday and Wednesday.

“The best thing about this is that we try to make the competitions as realistic as possible,”  journalism adviser Brian Higgins said. “This means students will have only a few hours to produce their content which is often the case in journalism.”

Wingspan Editor-in-Chief, senior Athena Tseng, is returning for her second year of competition and competing in the Online Multimedia category.

“I’m really excited because last year was a blast and you really get to make new friends and work towards our goal,” Tseng said. “I’m really working forward to see what other schools do and how they perform.”

WTV Executive Producer, junior Karina Grokhovskaya, competing in the General Broadcast News Package, believes there are some challenges to overcome in the competition.

“The only thing I’m kind of worried about is that it’s not going to be my normal environment,” Grokhovskaya said. “I just don’t know the setting as well as I know Liberty so it may just be hard to find where everything is, but I’m confident we will do great and hopefully win.”

Taking part in the competition for the first time, junior Ryan Shapiro is competing in the Sports Highlight Reel Category.

“I get a bunch of clips of a football game and create a reel out of it,” Shapiro said. “I have to give the statistics, the highlights of the game, and just go through the whole game. This will be my first competition so I’m not familiar with the atmosphere, but I think Wingspan will still do great.”
