  • “Competing allowed me to improve my skills under pressure as we only have a certain amount of time to complete our story,” Wingspan Editor-in-Chief, senior, Athena Tseng said. “I think the benefits are getting practice and experience. This year we had speakers so it was interesting to hear about their journey and the real-life experience in the field.”

Journalism students throughout the district competed in the 2nd Annual Frisco ISD Journalism Competition Tuesday and Wednesday at the CTE Center with Wingspan and WTV Students earning top honors including Best Website and Best of Show.

“I’m incredibly proud of all the students,” teacher Brian Higgins said. “We’ve done really well each of the two years but this year was extremely competitive with many of the Frisco schools doing well.”

Students were given prompts Tuesday morning and had approximately five hours to research, conduct interviews, and prepare their contest entries without any help from their teachers.

“Competing allowed me to improve my skills under pressure as we only have a certain amount of time to complete our story,” Wingspan editor-in-chief, senior, Athena Tseng said. “I think the benefits are getting practice and experience. This year we had speakers so it was interesting to hear about their journey and the real life experience in the field.”

After competing on Tuesday, local media professionals spent Wednesday morning speaking to the journalism students. At the end of the day, there was an awards ceremony with students celebrating their participation and success.

“I think competition helps everybody rise to the occasion and that was definitely true in this case,” WTV Producer, sophomore, Lauren Pratt said. “When you have something to fight for, in this case a title, you want it bad. You’re going to do your very best in order to succeed.”
