We’ve been going through the first game drought of the year and it most likely won’t be the last. A dreaded period for gamers who are looking for new and exciting games to come out, but there’s little to nothing happening. I despise whenever we go through these periods because it means that I can’t try out new and popular games, and I can’t write much for this blog without sounding repetitive by covering some of the same games from the past.

Now these usually last a few months or so, when the popular, big named companies aren’t funneling out games because they want to give quality over quantity. This leaves gamers to be stuck in limbo, playing some of the same games over and over and just trying to be satisfied with what’s out at the moment.

Despite happening every few months per year, and it sometimes seems dreadful, there can be good that comes from it. When these droughts occur, I usually realize that most of the games I play fall under the first-person shooter genre, and that I can only point and click on my enemies for so long before it gets boring. So I try to remedy this by trying out single-player games that might give me a different feel, for example, earlier this year I tried Melatonin, which I found to be fun, unique, and had an intriguing level of difficulty to it. The game drought allowed me to explore more out of my comfort zone and let me find some hidden gems.

Now I don’t believe this period will last long, especially since the popular Star Wars Jedi: Survivor game just came out that has been highly anticipated, and May is boasting a somewhat impressive set of releases throughout the month. For now, though, some of the best advice I could give if you’re waiting for these new games is to go explore some different genres of games. Maybe try to find a peaceful game that you don’t mind and it takes a lot of time to complete or play some fun multiplayer games to play with your friends, but if that doesn’t interest you, then take a break from playing games for a bit.

Sometimes it’s needed to take a step back and do something other than just keep on playing, especially if you aren’t enjoying it, so if you find yourself in that situation, just take a step back. Video games will always be here, which contributes to some of the beauty in video games, so don’t worry about missing something because whenever you want to have fun playing games, you can just hop right back in without skipping a beat.
